As many people would agree, charcoal is one of the more fun mediums to use. Charcoal sticks can be used to draw sharp lines like a pencil, but can also be applied on larger areas by rubbing them directly onto the paper. If a mistake is made when using charcoal, it is easy to just rub it away with your finger. Unlike other types of art, charcoal can use ‘subtraction,’ meaning, instead of drawing or making shadows on a blank piece of paper, a shammy (sheep skin cloth) is used to create highlights on a charcoal filled canvas. To make brighter highlights, white charcoal can be used.
